Laurel's Dedicatory Prayer Info - Tue. Nov. 19, 2024.

It's Michael.

For those who wish to attend the niche dedication on Friday, here are detailed directions:

Skylawn Mortuary is located on Highway 92 at the intersection of Highway 35, on your way to Half Moon Bay. You'll see their driveway on the right as you are traveling west. Take the driveway to the top of the hill. There's a parking lot on the left and the funeral home on the right. Go just past these and turn left. It's hard to give verbal directions from this point so take a look at the picture below. The red line takes you to the Mausoleum In The Sky. Park along any curb and come in the north entrance. Look for me or someone you know. We'll be meeting in a large room inside and toward the left not far from the entrance. They will set up 10-20 chairs for us.

Here is a link to the Skylawn Memorial Park website: https://www.skylawnmemorialpark.com/.../skylawn-memorial.... Scroll down to the box that says "View Property Map" for a .pdf of the property.

As I mentioned earlier, I will be at the church (1475 Edgewood Rd, Redwood City) Friday for anyone who would like to follow me to Skylawn. I will leave promptly at 10:30am.

Typically a grave dedication is done at the graveside. In the case of cremation, the remains are placed in an urn, then into a niche. Our niche is just around the corner from the room we'll be meeting in. It's a quiet, intimate location and too small for our group so we will not be "nicheside" for the dedication. Our niche marker is also not yet completed so I'm afraid there's nothing to see except our little unmarked "mailbox" where Laurel, and eventually I, will be laid to rest. So we'll just have the brief prayer nearby, mingle a bit, and that will be it. At a later date, I will receive Laurel's remains and place them into the urn, then arrange with Skylawn to put the urn into place. Her marker will be installed some time after that.

More info: There are many different styles of urns. The mortuary will sell you one or you can even buy them on Amazon. As Laurel mentioned earlier, we asked a woodworker friend to make one for us. I've attached a picture of his work of art. I want to display it in the house, not hide it in a niche! At some point, my remains will join Laurel in the urn. Remains are sometimes placed in a drawstring bag and then into the urn so another friend made us each a bacon drawstring bag for this purpose. Cool!

Laurel would have told you all about cremation, dealing with a mortuary, etc. I'm just going to urge you to take care of your burial arrangements sooner than later. It was so nice to just make a couple phone calls to put things in motion, rather than starting research and making decisions under duress when you'd rather be fully embracing this rare and special time after a death.
